This project was developed to raise awareness about accessible travel options in and around the City of Langford, BC. It was led by 4EVER Strategies, part of the 4VI group, with accessibility advocate and photographer Lexa Bergen as project lead, and videographer Graham Dorsay capturing the experience through film.
The project began with accessibility assessments conducted by Spinal Cord Injury BC, focusing on mobility and the built environment as well as consideration for features that support individuals who are blind or have low vision, Deaf or hard of hearing, and those who experience cognitive, sensory, or other forms of disability. Elements also included evaluating internet access, service dog awareness, customer service training, and participation in programs such as the Access2 Card.
A Weekend in Langford: Touring Through an Accessibility Lens
The content production took place in Fall 2024 and included a range of community experiences. House of Boateng Fine Foods welcomed us with delicious food and an inviting, accessible atmosphere.
The Langford Station
Offering a creative mix of shops. While not all were wheelchair accessible, several vendors placed items along the public area, allowing for easy engagement.
Sheringham Distillery
Our crew enjoyed a fully accessible tasting experience. A knowledgeable host guided us with clear, engaging, and accessible descriptions of the spirits, their production, and origin stories.
Goldstream Provincial Park
Greeting us with towering trees, vibrant fall leaves, and well-maintained trails. The trails were accessible to our group, though some signage could be improved for better readability and contrast. The Park Centre added to our visit with interactive displays and a welcoming shop.
The Fairways Hotel on the Mountain
Providing accessible accommodations and the surrounding pathways were barrier-free and easy to navigate for mobility device users.
Accessible Bus Shelter
Around Langford, we noted many accessible bus stops—several with shelters, seating, and route signage, supporting independent travel.
Starlight Stadium
We attended a Pacific FC soccer match. The event was energetic and inclusive, with accessible seating and ways for all visitors to participate.
Ed Nixon Trail
On a sunny morning after the rain, we explored the Ed Nixon Trail at Langford Lake. The views were stunning, and the trail was accessible during our visit. However, weather can impact conditions, particularly where gravel trails meet ramps or boardwalks. These can present barriers for some travelers.
The RAD Society
Our final stop was The RAD Society, where we met with Tanelle, who provides adaptive outdoor equipment rentals.Tanelle and Quinn connected over their shared interest in accessible outdoor experiences, with Quinn actively exploring some of the gear. He especially appreciated learning about inclusive outdoor spaces and opportunities to enjoy nature in Langford and the surrounding areas.
Adventure Without Barriers
Disability is experienced in many ways—including visible and invisible, permanent, temporary, or situational. Some travelers use wheelchairs or mobility aids, while others may experience sensory processing differences, chronic pain, or mental health-related access needs. Accessibility isn’t one-size-fits-all.
When planning a trip, disabled travelers may look for:
- Step-free access and wide doorways
- Visual and tactile signage
- Captioned media or visual alerts
- Quiet or low-sensory spaces
- Clear customer service practices
- Reliable information about trail or facility conditions
- Equipment rental options or adaptive support programs
Accessible travel means removing barriers and offering clear, consistent information—so visitors can plan with confidence and feel genuinely welcomed.
